Just for today

“Just for today, I will…”

What are you working on? What’s on your plate? Maybe you’re juggling multiple priorities or pursuing a goal that seems really hard – perhaps even unattainable. Too big to contemplate – the elephant that cannot be consumed. I feel your pain. And I have an idea. Maybe it would help to reframe it into something more bite-sized.

A friend gave me a bookmark-sized card which I now keep in my office – across the room from my desk where I can see it every single day. That bookmark sits in my unicorn mug – a place of honor – and even when I just catch a glimpse of it, I am reminded to focus on today. Just today. Just for today. I’m not suggesting that you throw away your calendar and just wing it. On the contrary, I’m suggesting that you focus on what you will do, or not do, or stop doing – just for t-o-d-a-y. Breaking it down can make things less scary, less frustrating, and actually more rewarding at the end of the day when you realize you’ve done it!

Here are some ways I use this powerful statement: Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind. Just for today I will exercise my soul. I will be agreeable. I will not try to tackle everything at once. Just for today I will be unafraid. Choose one and say it out loud. Then do what you say you’re going to do. Just for today.
