The Game of Leadership

with Tony Segreto

My guest today is one of the most widely recognized and influential sportscasters in the South Florida area. Any guesses who? Of course, it’s Tony Segreto! You’re a good guesser. I am honored to call him a friend and colleague.

Back to the Basics…

When Tony was a wee lad, he wanted to be… Roy Rogers, a major league baseball player, and a broadcaster. As you can guess, Tony is not Roy or a baseball player. (Spoiler! He technically  accomplished 2 of the 3, but you have to listen to the podcast  or watch the interview to hear how!) His competitive nature propelled him into the national spotlight and also, into this interview. Let’s dive in.

The Secret to Connecting

One of the (many) things I admire about Tony is his ability to connect with anyone. He has this knack for putting everyone (including me) at ease. As someone who is in the ‘people business’, I know it isn’t always as easy as Tony makes it look. Tony’s advice is to value people no matter what they do or who they are. Say goodbye to labels and silos. There’s no room for that here. Adaptation is crucial in connecting. Take time to value individuals and to learn their stories. You can’t fake it. You need to be yourself all the time. See the human behind the name and the title.

Jesse Owens & Grace

One of Tony’s first interviews was with Jesse Owens. (WOW! Anyone else impressed? Jesse also taught Tony how to drink scotch. No big deal.) Imagine receiving a call from the President of the United States saying that the weight of the United States is on your shoulders, but knowing when you return home, you will sit in the back of the bus and drink from a different fountain and use a different bathroom. All on the night before the big race that Jesse went on to win. Tony witnessed remarkable grace within Jesse that transformed his entire perspective and worldview.

Stop Chasing; Start Savoring

We could all benefit from slowing down, just a beat, and embracing life’s moments. Stop looking 30 steps ahead and be where you are now. Be the best version you can be in each and every moment. Every opportunity that comes your way? Take them as they come. Spend time with the people you love and savor the conversations and moments that fall into your lap.

Tony’s Passion Project

Not one to sit on his heels, Tony’s newest venture is the Baby Boomer Report. Tony has started a show to help older people stay inspired! Don’t take my word for it – watch or listen (after you’ve checked our OUR conversation)
